Making stair treads out of two 2x6 boards laid side by side is the easiest
way to go. It's fast
because you don't have to rip any lumber to width, and it works out great. For a
10" tread "run", the nosing works out to be one inch - perfect. By the way,
the "nosing" is the distance the tread extends beyond the vertical
riser below. It's the lip of the tread. By code, treads need to be between
9.25" and 14" (your local code may be slightly different so be sure to
check).
